Safeguarding Priceless Cultural Treasures
In a landmark two-day event, Holometrica, alongside its research partners, showcased the revolutionary journey from cutting-edge science to market-ready innovation in art conservation at the Benaki Museum of Greek Culture. The events, held on November 12th and 13th, 2025, highlighted the amazing technology of Digital Holographic Speckle Pattern Interferometry (DHSPI). A central theme throughout both days was the successful technology transfer from the research lab to the commercial market. The DHSPI system demonstrated is the precursor to Holometrica's SafeRay device.
Day 1: Art Meets Innovation – A Public Unveiling
On Wednesday, November 12, the museum opened its doors to the public for the event “Art Meets Innovation: DHSPI Technology Measures the Invisible”. Attendees witnessed a live demonstration where the DHSPI system—developed at the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser of the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (IESL/FORTH) and advanced under the European iPhotoCult project—was used to perform non-invasive diagnostics on priceless artworks in real-time.
The highlight of the day was the scanning of Domenikos Theotokopoulos's (El Greco) early masterpiece, “The Adoration of the Magi” (circa 1565-67). The DHSPI system, acting as a super-powered "diagnostic eye," used laser light to reveal and map microscopic deformations and hidden structural flaws invisible to the naked eye, providing a stunning visual representation of the artwork's structural health.
Day 2: A Professional Deep Dive for Conservators
On Thursday, November 13, the focus shifted to a specialized audience with the “Demonstration of a Portable Structural Diagnostics System - DHSPI Technology”. This session, aimed at conservation professionals, featured in-depth presentations by the technology's creators, including Dr. Vivi Tornari, Head of the Holography Laboratory at IESL/FORTH, and live measurement demonstrations. The event underscored the technology's role in shifting conservation from a reactive to a preventive science.
From Research Prototype to Market Leader: The Holometrica Story
"These two days at the Benaki Museum perfectly illustrate our mission," said Jenny Anagnostopoulou, Co-Founder & CEO of Holometrica, “It proves a powerful idea: cutting-edge research can be transformed into successful, market-ready products that benefit society," she said, and she added that “At Holometrica, we use our SafeRay technology to see the unseen. It detects hidden subsurface defects before they become visible damage, predicting future deterioration and saving time and money. Note that SafeRay is also applied in other sectors, such as Aerospace Manufacturing, Maintenance, Repair, Operations, and Energy Infrastructure” she concluded.
